Call for Panels & Debates
The 21st IEEE International Requirements Engineering Conference (RE’13) seeks proposals for panel sessions and head-to-head debates that focus on requirements engineering controversies, especially those that highlight the gulf between requirements engineering research and practice, or focus on the special conference theme of RE@21. Preference will be given to panels and debates that consist of members who have a significant presence in the field and present a diversity of views on the topic chosen.
Remember that panels can be fun and thought provoking, but too often they are boring or degenerate into a non-reviewed paper session. We will pay close attention to panel proposals that seem likely to fall into the first category.
New to RE’13 is the explicit call for head-to-head debates. We are actively seeking a moderated point-counterpoint style debate (or two) to ‘air’ at the conference. We will carefully consider those debate proposals that provide a forum for discussing dissenting viewpoints in a professional manner.
Panel Proposals
A panel proposal should comprise the following information:
- The title of the panel.
- A brief explanation as to why the topic is both important and controversial (i.e., usually subject to many perspectives).
- The name and a short Curriculum Vitae (CV) of the panel chair.
- The names of the panelists, including a summary of the positions they each plan to take on the panel, and the URLs of their personal web pages.
- Prior to submitting a panel proposal, you must contact ALL the proposed panelists and receive their agreement for attending RE’13 and participating in your panel, if accepted.
- Panel proposals should be directed at providing for a full 1.5-hour conference session. Please provide an outline of the organization of the panel and the topics to be discussed to highlight how the time will be used.
- A summary explaining why your panel will be thought provoking and fun for the audience. Please pay particular attention to how you intend to engage and interact with the audience.
Debate Proposals
A debate proposal should comprise the following information:
- The title of the debate.
- A brief explanation as to why the topic is both important and controversial (i.e., usually subject to extreme opposite perspectives).
- The name and a short Curriculum Vitae (CV) of the debate moderator.
- The names of the debaters (usually two people), including their position statements on the topic to be debated (up to 1000 words each), and the URLs of their personal web pages.
- Debate proposals should be directed at filling a 40-minute time slot at the conference. Please provide an outline of the organization of the debate: how the debate topic will be introduced, the positions discussed and responded to, and the outcomes determined. If you need longer to ‘air’ your debate, please explain your requirements.
- A summary explaining why your debate will be thought provoking and fun for the audience. Please pay particular attention to how you intend to engage and interact with the audience.
- The moderator’s strategy for ensuring that the debate will be balanced, and not degenerate into personal attacks or fist fights!
Submission Instructions
Please send panel or debate proposals via e-mail as a PDF file to the Program Chair. The e-mail should have the subject “RE13-PANEL” or “RE13-DEBATE” and the last name of the chair or moderator. All received proposals will be acknowledged, so please follow-up if that is not the case. Successful proposals will be invited to provide a 2-page camera-ready description of the panel or debate point-counterpoint to be published in the main conference proceedings.
